Antabuse

Antabuse (disulfiram) is a medicine that has been specially designed to treat chronic alcoholism. It works by causing highly-unpleasant symptoms when any amounts of alcohol are ingested. The following symptoms are experience if you ingest alcohol while on Antabuse: anxiety, chest pain, vomiting, nausea, sweating, blurred vision, flushing of the face, headache, mental confusion, choking, breathing difficulty, and weakness. Any drugs you are taking are supposed to be reported to your health care provider, especially vitamins, phenytoin, amitriptyline, anticoagulants, any nonprescription drugs that might contain alcohol, metronidazole, and isoniazid. Such mild side effects as skin rash, drowsiness, metallic taste in the mouth, mild headache, acne, impotence, or tiredness are possible. Make sure you tell your health care provider if your initially mild symptoms develop in intensity and get bothersome or you get any of the following serious side effects: seizures, dizziness, extreme tiredness, dark urine, loss of coordination, weakness, jaundice, vomiting, severe diarrhea, or large appetite changes. Some medical conditions that you have may affect the dose you are prescribed, especially the following ones: liver disease, diabetes, kidney disease, thyroid disease, seizure disorder, brain damage, or mental disorders.
